What is LCIL?
LCIL is an organisation established by disabled people, for disabled people.
All full members, our directors and our CEO are disabled people, as are many of our staff. We actively seek to recruit disabled staff and volunteers and welcome the involvement of non-disabled people as allies to support us in achieving the aims of our organisation.
Our mission is to empower disabled people. We aim to do this by promoting the benefits of disabled people, providing or encouraging the provision of services that facilitate independence for disabled people in daily living activities and in active participation and full integration into society.
We operate within the framework of the Social Model of Disability - in which disability is a problem of exclusion from ordinary life, rather than a medical impairment.
What We Do
In 2005, we consulted with our members, our stakeholders and other interested parties about the work of LCIL. As a direct result, we have actively pursued the following activities:
1 Training
We have continued to provide a range of training to disabled people and non-disabled people who are interested in addressing the barriers faced by disabled people.
2 Challenge
We have taken the reponsibilty (within our capacity and knowledge) of challenging the barriers in society that impact on the inclusion of disabled people.
We achieved through a range of engagement methods including working in partnership with organisation to support change, training and consultancy work, to bring out the views and experiences of disabled people and directly challenging decisions made which impact negatively on disabled people.
3 Developing new services
Inevitably, there is a long way to go before disabled people will, if ever be truly included and involved in everyday life on an equal basis. Therefore, we seek not to duplicate services, but to build on gaps and to develop new ways of working. Examples of such projects have included:
-
Research into transition issues for disabled people between school and adult life
-
Disabled Parents project
-
Development of accredited training programmes in access auditing (Level III and IV)
